That was a note from our speaker Arlan Suderman. He was referring to the time that it takes to be interactive with social media. This web conference was two years ago...There are many more tools available today. Arlan tweets by himself and uses no PR agency to do his social media. He was not implying harm only the amount of time that social media can take if you become absorbed in it and not undersand your overall goals.

I like the post Anne! I think Twitter lists aren't well understood by a lot of folks and they have the potential to maximize the effectiveness of time spent on a service like Twitter. For me, I also love it when events have lists and have gone so far as to create them for some events. The opportunity to see who's coming or once the event is underway, who else I may connect with in person is amazing! I have both public (ag women, ag bloggers, some events, etc) and private lists too.

Doesn't this just make you want to stand up and do something? I can only imagine that this scene is acted out more often than we would ever want to guess. I have close friends that have done this and when I asked the deployed soldier what I could do, he just said "random acts of kindness for my family." I think he wanted little distractions from the everyday reminder that he was "over there" and his wife and 5 children were "back here". They deserve our very best, all the time.

Vince, I have changed the last slide. Actually this slide was left over from a presentation Karen Jeannette and I did about utilizing networks for learning and performance.

It may be out of place in this presentation, but I wanted to take a stab at helping others understand goals and activities that go beyond providing information, scale, and broadcasting. I am still not convinced it belongs in this slide set. Nevertheless, I have changed it to be more positive. So, thanks Vince for pointing out my "soapbox" tone.

Might I suggest that you add a new last slide? Take the current final slide, duplicate, and switch to positive tone. As in

We are Engaged for Learning
* We Engage a Community of Learners
* We Contribute and Provide Information

etc....

Examples could be given of Extension and other ini Ag communities doing these things. Or, you could engagge the audience and ask tem for examples. But maybe you are already doing that with the last slide.

Thanks The Monks Family for the thoughts. I believe sometimes we should just sit. For me, I find great solace in a long slow jog (and I mean slooooow).

There is one thing I want to bring up. While it may appear that people are addicted to texting and technology, I believe that people are addicted to staying connected. They are not addicted to the technology; they are addicted to the social connection or the need to stay informed.

Watch teenagers who are texting. They are conversing, maybe venting, and maybe reading about the happenings of close friends (or not so close friends).

I believe there must be a balance in staying connecting to those who we don't see and those who are right in front of us.

Of our close friends--those who are near and those who are away--neither should be ignored.

Nice post. I have heard many people say that they would do anything if they could play music/dance/run/etc. like someone else. That's simply not true. Those who have perfected their craft have often dedicated all their spare time, even their lives, to practicing and perfecting. I think that some folks who are literally hooked on texting, FaceBook, etc. I guess it kind of bothers me that the technology has overwhelmed our society so much that many are addicted to it. Sometimes it's a spiritual experience to sit quietly and play the banjo, listen to some calming music, reflect on what's going on, and notice what's around us. I see too many people walking around with their heads down texting, or better yet, driving erratically through town texting. As a farmer friend told me, sometimes I sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits. Thanks for the post.

Nick, I think the flexibility of knowing when you check out social media outlets and when you don't have to is key. It is possible that people want to read this content like we expect people to read and respond to email. We should respond to those things that directly affect business and the other can be like those articles you scan or don't read in the newspaper.
